Chuck Palahniuk writes in his novel RANT about an encounter on an airplane and the narrator’s attempt to “build rapport” with his companion. We’ve been discussing the Consulting Rubric and the essentiality of building rapport with students in order to make them feel comfortable and ready to discuss their writing woes with us (sometimes tricky considering how most of these relationships evaporate after 45 minutes). We’ve also been talking about flexibility in tutoring and the need to adapt to different situations. In this reading, Chucky P. gets into familiar territory as he describes something all UWC Consultants should train themselves to do…observe our students, read their body language, and as questions. What say you all? Can you think if any other rapport building techniques?
